Miya was successful in securing a grant to undertake an applied research project with Girringun Aboriginal Corporation to explore different avenues, opportunities and constraints for Indigenous land and sea managers to fulfil their aspirations to look after country sustainably. Miya considered the various statutory and non-statutory mechanisms for securing Indigenous rights and interests over land and for accessing funding and advice to carry out land management activities. She also participated in negotiations between relevant government agencies and Indigenous groups with native title interests over the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics regions to ensure that their cultural interests in these areas were respected and reinforced through appropriate management arrangements.
